Bring-A-Friend Sunday and “The Transcendentalists” – with Rev. Chris McMahon

Literary and philosophical circles often refer to Transcendentalism, which included many amazing thinkers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Margaret Fuller. In fact, the Transcendentalist movement was a Unitarian movement, and it had a profound effect on Unitarian Universalism.

Work to refurbish the Wayside Pulpit continues this week. Ever wondered how it gets updated with weekly service information? Marija Eldredge generously prints service information for each week on sheets of paper measuring

36" high x 50" wide. Volunteers from Buildings and Grounds take the sheet and post it inside the sign display case, using magnets or thumbtacks. The process requires reaching over six feet high, opening and controlling the (heavy) door to the display case, juggling magnets or thumbtacks and grasping a sheet of paper often grabbed by the wind, while standing on uneven turf, in all kinds of weather.
One of the benefits of the refurbished sign is that this information will be much easier to post. The top two-thirds of the updated sign will be permanently in place. The title of the sermon will be printed on a much smaller piece of paper and affixed to the bottom third of the sign, inside an acrylic case and protected from the weather. It will be much easier for volunteers to reach, update, and maintain.

This photo is a rendering of the new sign, generously donated by an anonymous donor.
Work will continue for the next couple of weeks!
